I like your approach to decision making Neil. I like to think of it as two internal Neil's.... ones the cock and balls and one is the worrier.... we'll call them "Cock and Balls" and "Brain" for the purposes of my imagined internal monologue!

Brain: We have a problem with the bike engine; I can't decide whether to fix it, swap the engine, keep it or sell it.
CAB: We love the bike, we should just fix it!
Brain: We might be able to fix it?
CAB: We can definitely fix it.... we should definitely fix it
Brain: What if we can't fix it?
CAB: We can definitely fix it!
Brain: Should we ask the forum?
CAB: Fine, but mainly so they all know that we are going to fix it, so when we've fixed it, they'll know we've fixed it!
Brain: Humor me, what happens if we don't fix it?
CAB: Look, worst case scenario, we'll fit the engine hoping its fixed and it's not
Brain: What happens then?
CAB: We'll probably lose interest and then either live with a broken engine until it goes pop or eventually sell it anyway
Brain: That sounds like a lot of effort, we like the bike, we don't want to be in that situation
CAB: Fine, we'll just buy a shitload of shinny new parts..... then we're committed!
Brain: I LIKE IT!

Today is the turning point in this current work, I've started to put things back together  :)

All cleaned up and ready to go

New gasket

Head back on

Shims and buckets replaced

Camshafts fitted

New seals for the camshaft holders

All timed correctly

Then bolted down

Cam cover on then plugs and leads fitted

Engine back where it belongs

Just have to remember what went where

Should have it all connected and running tomorrow

I was right....it was all connected back up and running today

Had it running to gain some heat and all is fine, then once its proper hot I turned it off.....then could hear a sporadic splash as a drip hits the evhaust.....on closer inspection, this is what I have found

Thats the oil cooler gone then

WizzBang

Simple...4 bolts, undo, remove and replace.

Trying to find a replacement is a little harder though....new is £400 and bugger all on ebay atm

Green_Ninja

so do you reckon that was the issue all along?

WizzBang

Well, you only have to look at the symptons......slow water loss, with no leak marks.

Seeing what I found with the head gasket, ie nothing, it has to be something like this.

I'm going to set to it tomorrow with some chemical metal and see if I can bodge it until I can get hold of a replacement.
