Title: got a test ride booked
Post by: komp on August 09, 2019, 10:41:28 AM
on one of these
(https://www.yamaha-motor.com.au/-/media/products/motorcycle/road/maximum-torque/2018/mt10aspj/overview-panel/2018_mt10sp_bwm2_au_stu_003_450x375.ashx)

as much as i love the 899, if i do anything over an hour nowadays my wrists are in pieces.
so thought i would try a few nekids and see what i think
as tk cope is literally round corner, figured would start with this
I know a couple of others have one on the site, and feedback i have read seems mostly positive

I'm sure it's already on your radar but definitely worth giving the Street Triple 765 a shot.

Depends on the riding you want to do.

The Yamaha was quite disappointing when I test rode an SP. I think I'd built it up too much in my head.

The 765 looks lovely but a road naked needs to be grunty - not sure the 765 is enough! I'd try a Speed Triple RS instead.

I'd seriously consider a Streetfighter S if you can find a good one and like the Ducati marque.

must admit have always been curious about the triple engine, but never been fan of looks
out of the street and speed i think prefer the speed

i have ridden the 848 streetfighter, was good fun, made some lovely pops and bangs, but totally forgot about the S

if i was a rich man i would hold out for the new v4 streetfighter, but i think its gonna be around the 20k mark!

The 1100 Streetfighter S I had was lovely.

The engine was a hybrid of the 1098 and 1099 and worked really well.

I changed the bars on mine to Renthal fatbars and added spacers to the footpegs and it was perfect.

what were the service intervals like?
did it still need belts tensioning?
one of things i love about the 899 is that it can be serviced like a "normal" bike

S1000R. Alzo loves his. Keeper.
Speed Triple RS.Tucker loves his.
Street Triple. Ian Bogie and Sax love theirs.
MT10. Think David W has one .
Z1000. Foo's man Ian has one.
Try them all. 🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍🏍

i think the only one out of those i would consider that i hadn't previously is the speed triple
only bmw's and kwaks that do anything for me at the moment are their retro cafe racers
the R nine T and the Z900rs cafe
but not convinced they will be any easier on the old wrists ;)

i test rode the 1290 a few years back, and almost purchased, but went for the 899
i still like them a lot, but thought i would give a few other bikes a test before going back to it

Then you didn't test ride a Gen 2 - night and day better than the original.

I thought I wanted a naked bike coming back to riding.  Got one, did not get on with it. Went back to sports bikes and still love them.

If its an addition to the 899 then sure buy an older naked. If it's a replacement, id say think carefully incase you miss sports bikes.

You could always try something like the newer Honda CBR650R (gets good reviews and not as hard on the wrists apparently) however you might miss the power of a full on sports bike.

well I took a mt10 out Saturday
its a very nice bike, does everything you could ask of it, i liked seating position, looks and handling of bike.. oh and cruise control, brakes were excellent and in the "A" setting power was responsive, if not a bit  twitchy.
But didn't get any sense of excitement from riding it, felt very by the numbers.
maybe it was down to fact I could barely hear it underneath me?
maybe i am too used to power delivery from a v-twin?
maybe it is fact its not a sportsbike as neio has mentioned?
i dunno

i think i need a bit more of a emotional reaction before chopping in the 899!

if i was replacing both bikes with just one, the GT would probably be my choice.
but i like having the 2 bikes.
the smt allows me to ride in winter and rain and use to commute etc and not worry about adding miles to it or it getting covered in muck
while i can have something pretty and shiny in the garage when the sun is out and want a more focused ride.

The whole point of me posting the video, was to show the GT is as good as a supernaked or better. It is also a capable tourer.

I love mine but had to spend a small fortune to get it right.
New rear sets, adjustable bar risers and the big purchase was KTech shock and fork internals.

And I suspect your bike is much better than the SP as a result.

I was quite disappointed by the SP when I rode it.

Sometimes you need to live with something to realise the merits. I have another S1000R because it suits me perfectly...effortless...seamless power...at the moment there isn't another bike out there any better for me.
Enjoy the search...I hope you find the right one.

Works great on the S1000R...two choices...Road or Dynamic and they just get on with it...mates Ducati V4S has way too much choice that his mind is fried

what an engine! i have heard good things about it, but was not quite prepared for how good it was.
they didnt have an RS to take out, just the S, so no quick shifter, but very impressed with the bike in general.
still not sure about the looks, but not sure i would care with that engine underneath me.
its a serious contender right now.

Speed Triple S?

There's an 1150 version due next year. Very tempting.

I wonder if it's to balance any new emissions regs strangling the engine?

To keep up with the competition...the new generation BMW S1000R with the Shiftcam engine will lead the field soon...a bike for real men...not many on here...😂😉

None as far as I know.... ;)

Assuming you girls have finished and back to a serious question - you gonna get the new S1R Alzo?

New Speed will be an 1160cc apparently to beat euro 5(?) strangulation and gain a bit more power.

I have an eye out on the Ducati V4 Street fighter and the new S1000R...Ducati is imminent...S1000R is 2021 soonest.

V4 Streetfighter will be £18k I reckon.

Starting to get a bit rich for me.

£12k for the SDR was about as much as I'd spend. Thinking 2 used bikes next. Speed RS and 675R if I can sort a pair for sensible money. Loving my 675.

Yeah guessing Ducati would be around that...it would need to be spectacular...the new S1000R would be the real option...but like yourself I have had the thought of holding on to the S1000R and adding either an 899 or an 1199 Panigale to the stable.

Real men ride Ducatis ,Komp is therefore already a real man. If he rids himself of the 899 he becomes just another mortal.

Very nice. I approve.

Is that the model with the up/down QS??
Title: Re: got a test ride booked
Post by: komp on September 09, 2019, 04:12:54 PM
it comes with something called triumph shift assist, which i found to be shit when i went on test ride
so had a QS installed, only works on up shift... i believe, i haven't actually tried on downshift tbh

Thats odd mate, Triumph Shift Assist IS a quickshifter for the upchange with a blipper for the downchange. Tiger 1200 owner with it rate it highly so I'm surprised you found it shit :(

No model has it as standard...£325 extra supplied and fitted

But an up/down QS is available as (albeit extra) factory fit?

I'd never have a new bike without that now.

Dealer fits it if you specify it...as with Heated grips. I agree that QS up and Down is a must...now that I have lived with it...I couldn't be without it.

it didn't work like any quick shifter i ever used before, it would on occasion change without the clutch, but not very often.
the fact they still sell one as an option suggests that even triumph know its not a true QS

i found it very surprising that a bike of this spec came without one as standard
it is a necessity on a bike like this, hence why i had it fitted by the dealer before i collected
i did have a play with on ride to work this morning and does appear to be up and down.. bonus

The odd indeed, the Tiger 1200 XRT has shift assist as standard and I know for a fact is a QS with auto blipper but perhaps they haven't carried that properly over to the Speed, which is a real shame and possibly a bad move by Triumph!

Most dealers put the QS and Heated grips on as part of the negotiations...I know both Glasgow and Edinburgh agreed to do FOC when I took a notion.
